COMMUNITY CHAMPION: THE UNITED WAY OF WYOMING VALLEY Since its founding in 1921, United Way of Wyoming Valley has always played a key role in funding the human and social service needs of our community While much has changed over the past 100 years, the work of the organization today could not be more important or meaningful Eight years ago, the United Way of Wyoming Valley shifted its focus from it historicole as fundraiser and a funder to become a leading advocate for children living in poverty. The organization's programs and initiatives priorize the education and health of at-risk children, the financial stability of families, and support for critical basic needs like housing and utility assistance, homelessness and domestic violence services, elderly transportation, and more. United Way believes that education remains the best pathway ZERNI out of poverty. The organization abo believes in the potential of all children and that every child deserves opportunities to grow leam, and achieve. Helping children enter school ready to lear and graduating on time is a key component of the United Way's strategy In addition to funding partner agencies to serve more youth, the United Way has also developed a number of programs to help improve the odds of success for children and families. Many of these programs are delivered in partnership with many Wyoming Valley school districts The United Way invests in home visitation programs that support new and expectant parents from binh through the early years as well as initiatives that enhance early brain development and positive parenting The organization also promotes quality childcare access to Pre-K for school readiness, good school attendano, grade level mading out of school time programming, summer learning, and so much more. The Lume Foundation and United Way of Wyoming Valley have always enjoyed a great working relationship. While both organizations have ditent philanthropic models, we share a common goal-to strengthen our community. Over the years, the United Way has received support from the Millennium Cice, the Youth Advisory Committee, special initiatives, and is a favorite cause of many of the Foundation's fond holders As United Way of Wyoming Valley enters its second century of service, it does so with a strong sense of passion and commitment to children, families, and the community.
