Is surgery the only option for prolapsé? ..and if I had surgery for prolapse, is my problem "fixed"? In some cases surgery is an option, however we would always recommend working with a Pelvic Physical Therapist first. Often prolapse is a sign of the pelvic floor not working the way it should. It's common for new mothers and in women starting menopause. Pelvic physical therapy works to get the pelvic floor muscles working properly again to stop the symptoms of prolapse (pain, feeling of heaviness in the pelvic area, leaking urine, etc) .and surgery can help the immediate problem, however it doesn't address the underlying issue (or the "why" of how it happened). Approximately 40% of patients have new symptoms after getting a prolapse surgery. We often see patients who have issues because the surgery didn't hold because the underlying problem wasn't addressed (pelvic floor was not re-trained) If you have issues with prolapse, or had/will be having surgery give us a call today to see if you are a candidate for pelvic PT (570-970-0402).
